Binaisa was a traitor, say monarchists

By Sharon J. Tibenda9th-15th Aug 2010

Traitor?

The death of former Uganda President Godfrey Lukongwa Binaisa QC [RIP] on 5th August 2010 has elicited mixed reactions from members of the general public with others calling him a “ traitor” for his role [as the then Attorney General] in the 1966 Buganda Crisis.

Such negative outbursts are, however, rare in Africa.  In most parts of Africa, and certainly in Uganda, it is still considered impolite, and perhaps, even a “taboo”, to say bad things about people who have passed on.   On this occasion however, some ultra loyal Baganda monarchists who are still angry at Binaisa’s 1966 role, have dispensed with that cultural norm of decency and attacked the late Ex-President of Uganda in death. Kiggundu’s children are now targets, say IPC youth

By Timothy Nsubuga – 9th-15th Aug 2010

EC Boss Kigunddu

The opposition’s struggle to have the Kiggundu-led Electoral Commission [EC] disbanded and replaced before the next general elections scheduled for February 2011 took a new and ugly twist last week.

Some young extremists within the opposition IPC alliance who spoke to Uganda Correspondent in Kampala said as far as they were concerned, EC Boss Badru Kiggundu’s children are now legitimate targets for abduction and even torture.  This, they said, would now be their tactic of last recourse to force Kiggundu and his fellow EC Commissioners to resign and pave way for a new and credible EC. 30b Burundi “war debt is NRM’s campaign fund”

By Dennis Otim – 9th-15th Aug 2010

NRM Campaign Bus

When news broke last week that Museveni’s government was going to pay $14.2 million [approx Shs31.3 billion] to the government of Burundi “as compensation for material and financial support it had offered to the National Resistance Army [NRA] before the rebel group seized power in 1986”, alarm bells rang immediately.

A US based Ugandan called Robert Ojwang, for example, wildly suggested in an email to Uganda Correspondent that “…the Shs31.3billion Burundi war debt is actually money that the NRM is taking from the treasury to fund its campaigns in 2011”. (more…)

UK unveils a “poo-powered” VW Beetle car

By Sharon J. Tibenda9th-15th Aug 2010

Poo powered VW

The way we look at and think of human waste a.k.a “poo” may never be the same again.  A cool “poo-powered” vehicle, a convertible VW Beetle, has finally taken to the streets of Bristol in the United Kingdom.  The little “Dung Beetle”, as it has already been referred by sections of the British media, is the brainchild of Engineers from Wessex Water who want to encourage sustainable motoring. Kenyans vote for new constitution

By Timothy Nsubuga9th-15th Aug 2010

Supporters of the “Yes” campaign declared victory in Kenya’s referendum for a new constitution.  With most votes counted, it emerged that nearly 70% had backed the new constitution. (more…)

Our constitution needs Kenyan style reforms

By Charles Ochen Okwir – 9th-15th Aug 2010

Mr. Okwir

Kenyans, for all their recent political troubles, achieved something truly magnificent last week.  As a people, they finally voted [in a referendum] for a new constitution which they had, rather unusually, debated and mauled over for more than two decades.  That, by any standards, must be something worth a celebratory drink for all Kenyans.

Besides, coming less than three years after the violent general elections of December 2007 that claimed the lives of over 1,000 people, the fact that this referendum passed off peacefully is another great achievement worthy of mention here.  What a contrast to the ruling NRM’s internal elections in Uganda [around the same time] that were marred by gunshots, widespread rigging, and intimidation. Kalyegira wouldn’t be arrested in a democracy

By Abbey K. Semuwemba – 9th-15th Aug 2010

Mr. Semuwemba

I would like to agree with Daniel Kalinaki’s analysis of Timothy Kalyegira as a “conspiracy theorist” rather than a “terrorist”.  There is an old saying that one can never convince anyone who doesn’t wish to be convinced.

I therefore think whatever Kalyegira writes is up to the readers to make up their own minds on whether it’s true or not.  I don’t believe in conspiracy theories but I think it’s wrong for a government to arrest a journalist for writing something that they feel passionate about.  As long as the mainstream media continues to leave some important questions lying dormant, people will write their own opinions and there is very little the state can do about it.
