Details of Pope Benedict XVI’s scheduled visit to the United Kingdom have been announced by the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office. The Pope will start his visit on Thursday 16th September by attending a State welcome ceremony at the Palace of Holyrood House in Edinburgh where he will have an audience with Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. He will then travel to Glasgow to celebrate mass in Bellahouston Park.
On Friday 17th September, the Pope will hold a private celebration of Mass in the Chapel of the Apostolic Nunciature in Wimbledon; a London suburb best known for hosting an annual grand slam tennis championship. He will then address civil society groups in the Palace of Westminster before leading a celebration of evening prayer in Westminster Abbey.
On Saturday 18th September, the Pope will hold a Prayer Vigil on the Eve of the Beatification of Cardinal John Henry Newman in Hyde Park. The Pope will then travel to Birmingham on Sunday 19th September to celebrate mass for the Beatification of the Venerable Cardinal John Henry Newman in Cofton Park in Rednal.
The Pope’s visit to the UK will not be all plain-sailing though. Some people who are angry over the much publicised cases of sexual abuse of children by Catholic Priests are planning to arrest the Pope by way of a “citizen’s arrest”. It is however, unlikely that they will succeed. The UK government has invested millions of pounds in security during the Pope’s visit. END. If it’s Monday, it’s Uganda Correspondent. Never miss out again.
