Besigye to meet British PM David Cameron

20th Sept 2010
Dr. Kizza Besigye, the newly elected Inter Party Cooperation [IPC] flag bearer for the 2011 elections, is set to meet British Prime Minister Rt. Hon. David Cameron MP.
Dr. Besigye, who is also the Forum for Democratic Change [FDC] party President, will start his UK tour on Saturday 2nd October 2010 as Guest of Honour and Key-Note speaker at a Dinner-Dance party hosted by FDC-UK Chapter.
Publicity information sent out by Mr. Francis Muhoozi, the FDC-UK Chapter Secretary for Mobilisation, indicates that the event will kick off at 6:00pm and end at 01:00am. Guests are required to pay a £30 reservation fee in advance for both the dinner and dance. To make a booking for the event, guests have been asked to contact Mr. Francis Muhoozi on 07533105763 or by email at muhoozifxn@yahoo.com.
The event, scheduled to take place at Britannia Sachas Hotel which is located on Tib Street, Piccadilly-Manchester, is also likely to be attended by Ugandans living in London who will have made the 198mile journey to Manchester.
From Sunday 3rd–6th October, Dr. Besigye will then attend the Conservative Party conference at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in the Birmingham; the UK’s second largest city. The 2010 Conservative Party conference is expected to attract up to 13,500 Delegates.
At the Conservative Party conference, Dr. Kizza Besigye will most likely meet his chief host and sitting British Prime Minister Rt Hon. David Cameron MP for talks on a wide range of issues touching on relations between Ugandan opposition parties and the British government.
It is widely anticipated that among the issues up for discussion will be the opposition’s ongoing campaign for free and fair elections in Uganda and in particular, its campaign against the Kiggundu-led Electoral Commission that it accuses of being sympathetic to Museveni’s ruling NRM party.
Britain has a unique diplomatic reach in relation to Uganda which it can use to influence political events if it so wishes. It is also the one country in the world which is concurrently a member of several influential international organisations like the European Union, the North Atlantic Trade Organisation [NATO], the Commonwealth, as well as being one of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council. It is also a major share-holder in both the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund; both of which give Uganda massive financial support.
Mr. Sam Akaki, FDC’s International Envoy to the UK and EU, said “…Dr. Besigye is not only FDC party President. He is Chairman of the Democratic Union of Africa [DUA] and IPC’s flag bearer for the 2011 elections. All Ugandans and friends of Uganda in the UK should attend this event and put whatever questions they have to Dr. Besigye, after all, he could be President in less than six months time”. END. If is Monday, it’s Uganda Correspondent. Never miss out again!
