Mr Semuwemba’s article stands out as the first comment on the IPC problems which led to the pull out of UPC from the bind. His style of writing indicates a person who picks up half or just part of a story and goes to writing without actually understanding the core of the debate in question. He spent a lot of time bringing in Israeli and other stories which are somehow irrelevant in terms of the going-ons in Uganda Politics since 1986.

What Mr Semuwemba needs to understand is the amount of unreasonableness, the mockery of Ugandans by Ugandan politicians, the ubiquitous deceit that has made the murderous, most corrupt and dictatorial regime of Yoweri Kaguta Museveni last for 25 years and plunged our country into a state of sheer despondency.

The most fundamental point that Ugandans need to pick and try to understand is what Dr Olara called the ‘cross-road state’ of the IPC members, namely you cannot go into an election knowing that the electoral commission is bogus and the electoral register is tampered with. That is like getting into a ship which you know it is going to sink. That is un-principled, suicidal, and outright foolish.

The undercurrent of such divorce from reality and principles smells of opportunism if not outright playing the game of spoilers for Museveni. The second reason cannot be seriously discounted because if you look at the leaders who want to draw IPC into the obnoxious unprincipled position of despondency, you can see that most of them are power seekers and their characters are not far from that of Museveni. Those who are looking to go to Parliament as a means of getting their livelihood will be so frightened to boycott Museveni’s election. For them their stomach comes first. The country can go to hell.

I am surprised that Mr Semuwemba who lives in London and has seen and benefited from the fruits of democracy can be so simplistic about the fight for democracy. He knows how the dictator came to power. What has he done to try and liberate Uganda in the last 25 years? I hope Abbey and people like him will revisit history books and learn how the West especially Britain where he now lives very comfortably and can write anything he wants went through to attain their democracy.
