President Yoweri Museveni has told world leaders gathered in New York for the UN General Assembly that Uganda is on track to achieve most of the eight Millennium Development Goals.
He revealed that of the eight MDG targets, Uganda was lagging behind in maternal and child health. He however reassured the world body that Uganda is “…stepping up efforts in the two areas”.
President Yoweri Museveni also said Uganda has developed a national roadmap to speed up reduction of maternal and child mortality and morbidity.
The strategy, Museveni said, focuses on effective antenatal care and skilled attendance at birth among others. “…In Uganda, we have never believed in donor-anchored MDGs as a sustainable solution. MDGs should be anchored on the growth and transformation of the economies of the target countries”, Museveni said
Museveni said he was glad that the “cloud of Afro-pessimism” is dispersing, noting the growing recognition of Africa’s promise by the West. The continent’s economies, the president said, have become “roaring lions” despite their under-developed infrastructure.
He said if infrastructure bottlenecks like electricity and transport are resolved, then “Africa’s potential is limitless”. END. If it’s Monday, it’s Uganda Correspondent. Never miss out again!
