Reports reaching Uganda Correspondent suggest that the government yesterday sent heavily armed UPDF soldiers to Jinja after it got intelligence reports that the opposition was planning to kick-start nationwide pro-democracy protests in Jinja.
Some eye witnesses whose reports are yet to be verified have told Uganda Correspondent that hundreds of UPDF soldiers armed with AK47 assault rifles, light machine guns [LMGs], and rocket launchers have been cited roaming a largely deserted Jinja town centre in single file with fingers on the trigger.
In an email to Uganda Correspondent, Joseph Nabeta, a resident of Kirinya in the outskirts of Jinja town, said while on his way back home, he saw a number of Armoured Personnel Carriers [APCs] driving along Jinja’s Main Street as a slow pace.
Mr. Museveni, the man whose ‘victory’ has been rejected by the top three opposition leaders, promised last week that he would chew opposition protesters and leaders to pieces and spit them out. The opposition on the other hand have insisted that they are absolutely determined to bring Uganda back on the path of democracy be toppling Museveni through protests.
The actual truth about the army’s deployment in Jinja remains to be seen but we shall bring them to you as soon as we get them. END. Please log into www.ugandacorrespondent.com every Monday to read our top stories and anytime mid-week for our news updates.
