Obama tells Gaddafi to stop attacks against civilians
By John Stephen Katende
28th March 2011:- US President Barack Obama has issued a stern warning to embattled Libyan Leader Col. Muammar Gaddafi to immediately halt his regime’s attacks on civilians.
In a March 26th letter published in Uganda Correspondent today, [See: Our quick action has saved countless Libyan lives] the US President kicked off by offering justification for the allied attacks on Gaddafi’s forces that the US is a part of. “…When someone like Qaddafi threatens a bloodbath that could destabilize an entire region, it is in our national interest to act. In fact, it’s our responsibility”, Obama said.
Other than the apparent moral and ‘strategic interest’ case for the international community’s intervention in Libya, the US President also pointed out the legal basis for their intervention as being a United Nations Security Council Resolution. “…Along with our allies and partners, we are enforcing the mandate of the United Nations Security Council”, Obama pointed out.
Obama’s toughest message to Gaddafi was however regarding the latter’s attacks against the rebels fighting to oust him, and especially, against innocent civilians. “…Our message to Qaddafi is clear: Attacks against innocent civilians must end, his forces must be pulled back”, Obama said.
The US President was also at pains to stress that “…humanitarian aid must reach Libyans in need and those responsible for the violence in Libya must be held accountable”. END. Please log into www.ugandacorrespondent.com every Monday to read our top stories and anytime mid-week for our news updates.
