Dr Besigye treats fellow Nakasongola prisoners
By John Stephen Katende
25th April 2011: Jailed opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye, who is also the President of the Forum for Democratic Change [FDC] has put his professional medical skills to excellent use in Nakasongola prison by treating his fellow prisoners who were rotting away at the detention facility without medical attention from the government.
A Democratic Party [DP] official who visited Nakasongola prison told Uganda Correspondent that Dr. Besigye was shocked to find that the newly built Nakasongola prison did not have adequate medical equipments, drugs, and personnel to cater for even minor ailments that are afflicting the inmates.
“…Besigye was terribly shocked. I was told he stood still several times in disbelief. Many sick prisoners complained to him that no doctor had seen them. He then decided to give them some basic treatment. You know the man treated the NRA in the bush without modern facilities. So I think it was easy for him to do the same”, the DP official said.
A Uganda prisons official however refuted the story and said as an institution, they can never allow a doctor who is not officially accredited to offer medical treatment to inmates in any prison in Uganda.
