Mystery surrounds Besigye’s bail application
By Timothy Nsubuga
26th April 2011: There appears to be confusion over Wednesday’s scheduled court appearance of the jailed Forum for Democratic Change [FDC] President Dr. Kizza Besigye. Besigye is expected to appear in court today following his arrest last week.
The FDC leader was remanded in Nakasongola prison by Nabweru Magistrates Court after being charged with “unlawful assembly”. The presiding Magistrate Justine Atukwasa rejected his bail application saying there were “other pending matters”.
Today is the date court set for Dr. Besigye to apply for bail. Information reaching Uganda Correspondent however suggests that the government may be nervous about revealing the exact court that will hear Dr. Besigye’s bail application.
Whereas Dr. Besigye’s Lawyers say they will attend Nabweru Magistrates Court [where Besigye was charged] tomorrow at 12:00 O’clock, other sources were by press time suggesting that the government had decided to arraign Dr. Besigye before a Magistrates Court in Nakasongola where he is detained.
This, our source says, is a deliberate attempt by Museveni’s government to stop Dr. Besigye’s supporters from flooding to Nabweru Magistrates Court to hear their leader’s application for release on bail. According to the same source, the government’s secrecy over the location of Besigye’s bail also suggests that the State may be preparing to charge Dr. Besigye with treason and re-arrest him immediately he is released on bail.
President Museveni’s Deputy Private Secretary Mr. Kintu Nyago stunned the nation over the weekend when they alleged that Dr. Besigye was plotting to overthrow the government through unconstitutional means bare a week after his boss Museveni had declared to the world that Dr. Besigye has no subversive “Plan B”.
The DPP’s office had earlier also denied knowledge of any pending treason charges against Dr. Besigye. END. Please login to www.ugandacorrespondent.com every Monday to read our top stories and anytime mid-week for our news updates.
