Police officer urges more people to join street protests
By George Murumba
19th April 2011: In an interesting twist that suggests that Uganda’s anti-riot police officers are prepared to emulate their Egyptian counterparts, a serving police officer has told a Journalist that if the ‘Walk-to-Work’ protests momentum is maintained, they will abandon President Museveni and join pro-democracy activist.
Speaking to a Kampala Journalist on condition of anonymity, the police officer said, “…you see in the armed forces, an order is an order. However, we sympathize with Ugandans. But at the same time, we blame you for being cowards. If you guys can get out of your offices in big numbers on to the street, you can be sure we will join you eventually”.
The government’s law enforcement agencies have however warned protesters of severe consequences because in their view, the protests are unlawful because the protesters have not sought police permission and that their activities do compromise national security.
The office of the President on the other hand has said from day one that the protesters are hell bent on overthrowing the government unconstitutionally and President Museveni has threatened to charge opposition leaders with treason.
