NRM official flees from angry London crowd

14th Nov 2011:
A top official of the United Kingdom branch of the ruling National Resistance Movement [NRM] was on Saturday 12th November forced to flee for dear life from the ‘Grand Public Debate’ organised by Forum for Democratic Change [FDC] UK Chapter in London.
Topic of discussion was “Uganda at Cross-Roads: Which Forward?”. Mr. Robert Egwea, the NRM UK Chapter’s Secretary for Research who was one of the main presenters at the ‘Grand Public Debate’, however took issue with the topic and said it was misleading because it created a false impression that Ugandan is on the verge of collapse whereas not.
He insisted that there was no crisis in Uganda because his party the NRM was fully on course to implement its development and prosperity manifesto promises. Sensing the mood of the audience, Egwea tried to calm tempers down by apologising to Dr. Besigye for his government’s human rights abuses.
Even that, however did not go down well with the majority in the audience who angrily shouted at the now bewildered NRM official. Unable to take the tense heat of widespread dissent from the audience, Mr. Egwea voluntarily decided to make an unceremonious exit from the conference hall amidst deafening boos.
Mr. Charles Okwir, the London based Lawyer and Journalist who was moderating the debate tried hard to calm down the boiling political tempers but failed. In resignation, Mr. Okwir said if ever there was any need for evidence that ‘people power’ works, then Egwea’s fate is the perfect answer.
As NRM’s defeated political warrior Robert Egwea walked out through the central path of the conference hall, the situation nearly got ugly when a well built man confronted Egwea and engaged him in fierce argument, forcing the NRM official into a hasty retreat.
Other UK party representatives who made presentations at the ‘Grand Public Debate’ in London were Mr. Opio Oryem of Uganda Peoples’ Congress [UPC], Mrs Edith Mpanga of Uganda Federal Alliance [UFA], Mrs Betty Atikku from the Democratic Party [DP], Mr. Richard Semitego of Ssuubi, and Mr. Moses Kiwanuka of United Uganda Patriotic Forum [UUPF].
The other notable public figure who spoke at briefly at the conference was Col. Samson Mande. As soon as the dissident UPDF Col. revealed his name, a rapturous applause exploded in the audience. “…I have fought many dictators. I don’t know who I will fight next”, the soft spoken Colonel said, attracting even more applause. END.
