Museveni woos geothermal power investors

By Online Team

28th May 2012:

President Yoweri Museveni has gone on a charm offensive to woo geothermal investors to tackle Uganda’s perennial problems with power shortages.  Museveni said the government of Uganda welcomes Public Private Partnerships in the energy sector, adding that the number one priority for Uganda is affordable electricity to drive development through industrialization.

The president made the remarks on May 24, as he met Mr George Percy, the Managing Director of Gulf Geothermal Ltd, a United Kingdom based company, who had called on him at his upcountry home in Kisozi, Gomba district.  Museveni welcomed the investor and assured his company of a good and conducive investment climate in Uganda.

During the meeting Mr. Percy expressed his company’s interest to invest in geothermal exploration and electricity generation in Uganda.  He said that Gulf Geothermal Ltd had a lot of experience in the sector, and had undertaken a number of projects in the North East of England and along the East African rift valley.

He added that his company was interested in undertaking thermal exploration and electricity in Uganda, utilizing the country’s big thermal energy potential which would generate cheap and affordable electricity.

The Kisozi meeting was also attended by the Minister for Energy, Engineer Irene Muloni, and the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Energy Mr. Kabagambe Kariisa.  END.  Please login to www.ugandacorrespondent.com every Monday to read our top stories and anytime mid-week for our news updates.
