Rwanda: Opposition wants its leader’s death probed

The Democratic Green Party of Rwanda has called on the Rwandan government to re-open investigations into the assassination of its Ex-Vice President, Andre Kagwa Rwisereka, whose body was found decapitated near the town of Butare 35 miles from the capital Kigali.
Saturday, July 14, marked exactly two years after the murder of the prominent opposition leader, Kaggwa Rwsereka who was murdered one month before the general election in which President Paul Kagame was declared winner by 93 per cent.
Since then the perpetrators of that crime have never been brought to justice. Thomas Ntivuguruza, the only suspect in the assassination of the then vice president of Rwanda’s Green Party, was released without trial, a move that left several questions unanswered.
Uganda Correspondent has learned that while Rwisereka’s Canada-based son, Jean Luc Havugwa Rwisereka Jr is busy laying the groundwork for the family to demand an independent United Nations investigation into his father’s death, the Green Party on the other hand is lobbying the international community to push Kagame’s government for a full investigation.
Sweden-based Frank Habineza, the Founding President of Democratic Green Party of Rwanda, said: “…It’s two years since our member was brutally murdered but we understand the National Public Prosecution Authority of Rwanda announced in October 2011 that they did not have enough evidence to pursue the case and thus decided to close the file.”
“The whole world knows that, the United Nations Secretary General, Ban Ki moon, the European Union, the Government of France, the Government of Canada, among others, requested the Rwandan authorities to expedite investigations,” said Mr Habineza, adding that: “We are still waiting.
Whereas the Rwandan authorities say that Rwisereka’a murder was a business motivated murder, perhaps orchestrated by his former business partners, opposition leaders in Rwanda insist that it was a politically motivated murder to silence the opposition.
