Museveni tells clergy to preach anti-HIV gospel
By Sharon Tibenda
17th Dec 2012:
President Yoweri Museveni has appealed to religious leaders in Uganda to continue preaching the gospel of the danger engendered in the HIV/AIDS pandemic, especially to the vibrant young generation saying the disease is now on the increase among the youths.
He said Uganda, which is 85% Christian, must see all religious leaders take a concerted effort to entrench the awareness among the people in order to ensure that the prevalence rate of the HIV/AIDS pandemic takes a declining trend.
The pandemic had reduced after the intervention of the government way back 1990s and Uganda became a model country in the whole world in fighting the HIV/AIDS disease”, the President said. Mr. Museveni rubbished the confusion among some Ugandans who seem to advocate the notion that men who are circumcised cannot contract the HIV/AIDS.
He noted that this confusion is one of the ways that led to sharp increase in the prevalence of the pandemic in the Ugandan society. The President thanked the Anglican Church for rejecting homosexuality in Uganda and said the practice cannot be accepted in the cultural settings in the country.
The President made the remarks today during a ceremony to install the new Archbishop of the Church of Uganda – the Most Rev. Stanley Ntagali. Ntagali became the 8th Prelate of the Church of Uganda at a colourful ceremony held at St. Paul’s Cathedral, Namirembe.
The ceremony rites were led and conducted by Dean of the Province of the Church of Uganda and Luweero Diocesan Bishop, the Rt. Rev. Evans Mukasa Kisekka. Archbishop Ntagali replaces Archbishop Henry Luke Orombi who has shepherded the Church of Uganda for the last 9 years.
Archbishop Ntagali, hitherto diocesan bishop of Bunyoro-Kitara, was elected Archbishop by the House of Bishops on 22nd June this year. In his charge, the new Archbishop pledged to join hands with the government of Uganda to serve the people.
Ntagali also stressed that Christians needed to be guided against evils like corruption, defilement, rape and homosexuality. END: Login to www.ugandacorrespondent.com every Monday to read our top stories mid-week for our updates
