HRW asks Obama to stop killer robots
By John Stephen Katende
25th February 2013:
The global human rights watchdog Human Rights Watch (HRW) has appealed to people across the globe to sign a petition calling on U.S. President Barack Obama to halt the research and development of what it called ‘killer robots’.
“…At this very moment, military researchers – including some in the United States – are laying the groundwork for an unthinkable type of weapon – killer robots”, said Steve Goose, HRW Director of the Arms Division.
According to HRW, the killer robots are intended to select targets and fire without direct human oversight. They would not be governed by human reasoning or be able to feel compassion.
“..A killer robot might not be able to tell that that a child running into the street with a toy gun is not a threat; it may not comprehend a mother’s plea for reason as she defends her child’s life.” Mr Goose warned.
HRW watch intends to deliver the petition to the White House on February 28th. “…I urge you to sign this petition and share this email with your friends, family and co-workers. We cannot stand idly by.” Goose appealed.
