Museveni salutes UPDF for innovation
By George Murumba
4th February 2013:
President Yoweri Museveni has commended the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) leadership for introducing the idea of a Military Engineering College that has been established in Lugazi town in Buikwe District.
The president made the remarks when he was presiding over the first graduation ceremony held at the college last week. At the event, 17 students graduated with Diplomas, and 28 graduated with Certificates in engineering, block and concrete laying.
He congratulated the graduates upon their achievements and assured the college community that more students would be enrolled. He also appealed to the graduates to be disciplined and avoid alcohol which leads to promiscuity – a big factor in the HIV/AIDS infections. He said if they got infected, they would be a burden to both the army and their families.
The president also commended the army leadership for its innovation in generating electricity using a Wind Mill that was fabricated from local timber and copper wires. He was particularly impressed by the fact that the only imported components of the Wind Mill were the magnets used to manufacture the turbine.
The newly commissioned Wind Mill generates 25 Kilowatts of electricity per hour. The president said the army had made a big stride by adopting local products and building a house with walls made from rice stocks and other additives.
The Commandant of the Uganda Military Engineering College, Col. Dennis Sabiiti reported that the wind turbine that was launched by the President was a testimony of the students’ appreciable performance.
