Besigye will be defeated in the open, says govt

By Timothy Nsubuga

6th Oct 2010

The NRM government has hit back at FDC party President and IPC flag bearer Dr. Kizza Besigye for suggesting in a speech in Manchester-United Kingdom that the opposition could declare its own results in 2011.

In a reaction to the news of the opposition’s intention to declare its own results in the 2011 elections that Uganda Correspondent broke on Monday 4th, NRM government Spokesperson Mr. Ofwono Opondo said the NRM would like to assure Ugandans that under the existing laws and procedures, voting, counting, tallying and announcing of results are done in the open after polls close at 5pm Uganda time (GMT).

He added that “…Ugandan law permits candidates or their agents, media, and election observers into tallying rooms to monitor whatever goes on and no one least NRM has intention of cheating FDC or opposition.  Besigye will be defeated in the open”, Opondo said.

The NRM Spokesperson further added that this time round, Besigye’s open defeat will be final and added that “…so that he can hopefully tell his mother when they meet again”.

He also said once Besigye’s defeat happens in the open and transparently, Besigye “…will have no capacity to mobilise anyone for violent reactions”.

Mr. Ofwono Opondo also said the NRM was confident of retaining its majority in parliament.  “…While parliamentary seats may change hands between parties, NRM will retain the present majority of over two thirds”, Ofwono Opondo maintained.  Please read Ofwono Opondo’s full reaction in our “opinions” section.  END.  If it’s Monday, it’s Uganda Correspondent.  Never miss out again!
