Buganda Kabaka’s convoy attacked with tear gas

18th April 2011:- A convoy of vehicles carrying the Kabaka [King] of Buganda His Highness Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II has been attacked with tear gas canisters by police officers who have been engaged in running battles with supporters of opposition leaders who were arrested today as they set off on the ‘Walk-to-Work’ protests called by ‘Activists for Change’.
The incident took place at Banda Trading Centre, a suburb of the capital city Kampala situated on the Kampala-Jinja highway as the Kabaka’s convoy headed towards the city centre. It is not clear at this stage why the police targeted the Kabaka’s convoy as it was impossible to get a comment from police authorities amidst the fast moving events.
Over the last few years, relations between President Museveni’s government and Buganda kingdom have been rocky owing to Buganda’s demands for federalism and its properties among many other things.
