Besigye’s car could have a time bomb, says FDC
By Timothy Nsubuga
9th May 2011: A senior National Executive Committee [NEC] member of the opposition Forum for Democratic Change [FDC], who has requested anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter, has told Uganda Correspondent that he is extremely worried that government security operatives may have installed listening devices and other dangerous things into Party President Dr. Kizza Besigye’s car.
Dr. Besigye’s car was smashed on 28th April by Asst. Superintendant of Police Gilbert Arinaitwe, who is attached to the notorious Rapid Response Unit, as police and military police officers violently arrested the opposition leader who was attempting to drive to his bank after a court banned him from participating in the ongoing ‘walk-to-work’ protests.
News however broke last week that the opposition leader’s vehicle, a Toyota Land Cruiser, which had been parked at Wandegeya Police Station, was taken away and repaired by security operatives who later drove it to FDC headquarters on Entebbe Road to hand it over to the party. Party officials however refused to receive the vehicle, forcing the security officers to hand the vehicle to Dr. Besigye’s sister Olive Kobusingye.
Speaking to Uganda Correspondent, the worried FDC official said, “…as a member of his political family, I am strongly opposed to his repossession and use of what I now call his former car, which was virtually destroyed in the vicious attack, vandalised, repaired then returned. You cannot be sure what radio-active agents, listening devices, or even a time bomb may have been planted in the car. He should not use the telephones for the same reason”.
The police have however dismissed FDC’s concerns as mere rumours and allegations. “…You know that those are rumours and allegations that were bound to come up after the repairs. No such thing was done”, said the police officer. END. Please login to www.ugandacorrespondent.com every Monday to read our top stories and anytime mid-week for our news updates.
