Only the web makes Besigye-Museveni equals
By Joseph Tumushabe
23rd July 2012: Are you using your phone and computer to give you everything you need? The Banyankore have a saying that “twingane etura aha marwa” – equality is only around a pot of brew! Otherwise we are supposed to be unequal. Obviously, my ancestors did not foresee the arrival of the information age!
If there is anything that has shown that we can easily be equal, it is the information age and the way rural Africa, aided by the ever enterprising Chinese, have embraced it. Thus, you will find men like Bill Clinton in the US who boast never to have owned or used a mobile phone.
Yet my father communicates with me on a mobile phone (there is more than 2000 km between us). The other day, my brother visited them in the village and we were able to do a mini-video conference through Skype. My sister living more than 5000 miles away gives me news about home faster than I can talk to my next door neighbour!
Matooke and potato sellers, fishermen and thugs, prostitutes and catwalk models, presidents and street vendors are all united through one main World Wide Web. Both Museveni and Besigye may not see eye to eye but they are linked by the web!
When it comes to poor networks, repetitions, poor quality of audio and video through the net this is also something the World shares from busy London, New York, Doha, Guangzhou to rural Kapapi in Masindi or Mongu in Western Province, Zambia.
But do we know how we can use the laptop and telephone to create personal wealth and solve other life problems in our midst? Think and let me hear from you first. END. Login to www.ugandacorrespondent.com every Monday to read our top stories mid-week for our updates
