UK donates anti-terrorism gadgets to Uganda

By Dennis Otim

30th July 2012:

In yet another move that signals the West’s increased interest in the security affairs of the Great Lakes Region of Africa, the British government has donated high spec electronic detectors to Uganda.

The detectors, which are used to detect traces of explosive, could be an invaluable tool in the fight against global terrorism.

His Excellency Martin Shearman, the British High Commissioner to Uganda, on Friday 20 July 2012, formally handed over a number of Explosive Trace Detection Machines to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) in Uganda.

The machines will assist in strengthening aviation security detection capability at Uganda airports.  He also presented certificates to CAA staff who participated in the UK-provided Aviation Security Training Course at Entebbe.

In a statement, the British government said, “…terrorism is a global issue. The UK government values its close relationship with Uganda and remains committed to working together to strengthen the aviation security regime and tackle the terrorist threat.”

The UK Department for Transport (DfT) also have regional staff in East Africa who will continue to work closely with the Civil Aviation Authority in Uganda.  END.  Login to www.ugandacorrespondent.com every Monday to read our top stories mid-week for our updates
