Big demo against NRM UK Convention announced
By Online Team
3rd Sept 2012:
A cross section of Ugandans living in the United Kingdom have finalised plans to stage a massive demonstration at the second ‘Uganda Convention UK’. In a message sent out to Ugandan online forums, a one Mustapha Semanda Magero urges Ugandans to join the demonstration against what he called “…the NRM sponsored UK Convention organised by Willy Mutenza”.
In what seems to be an export and or extension of domestic Ugandan political battles into the heart of the United Kingdom, Mustapha Magero says, “…if they cannot allow the opposition in Uganda to have rallies or peaceful assemblies, why should they expect to have it easy in London”, a clear reference to the many incidents when the Uganda police has frustrated opposition rallies.
The organisers of the demonstration also accuse the Ugandan government of wasting tax payers’ money to stage grand events like the Uganda Convention UK when “…our people are dying in hospitals which are ill equipped with no medicines or doctors.”
Vice President Edward Ssekandi, First Lady Janet Museveni, and KCCA Executive Director Jennifer Musisi are among the key personalities expected to attend the event. Jennifer Musisi’s 30million a month salary also came in for some criticism from the demo organisers.
“…Jennifer Musisi alone earns over Shs.30,000,000/= a month, which is more than the UK Prime Minister earns. Let these NRM thieves know that they are not welcome in the UK and the whole world is watching them.”
The other key personality attending the convention, and around whom Ugandans in the United Kingdom are being mobilised to turn up for the demonstration, is the controversial British politician Baroness Lynda Chalker, who has been President Museveni’s long time friend.
The organisers accuse her of doing public relations work for President Museveni in Western governments. “…No wonder he (Museveni) kills and no western governments raise a finger. This woman has had close relationships with many African dictators, including Obasanjo of Nigeria. This is your chance to further isolate this (NRM) regime.”
Uganda Correspondent could not independently verify the allegations labelled against Baroness Chalker, and all efforts to get a comment from her were futile.
As if to shame fence-sitting Ugandans to turn up for the demonstration, the parting shot of the message says: “…Many innocent people have died trying to express their freedoms in Uganda. Those of you in Europe – this is our turn to show solidarity to our brothers and sisters in Uganda who get imprisoned, tear-gassed or gunned down every day.”
The Uganda Convention UK is scheduled to take place on September, 15 at the Troxy, 490 Commercial Road, London, E1 0HX from 9:00am. END. Login to www.ugandacorrespondent.com every Monday to read our top stories mid-week for our updates
