Dr. Kizza Besigye warned govt against election theft

Presidential candidates for the 2011 general elections are to be nominated today and tomorrow at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole.

The candidates so far cleared for nomination are incumbent President and NRM flag bearer Yoweri Museveni, IPC’s flag bearer Dr. Kizza Besigye, UFA’s Beti Kamya, and PPP’s Jaberi Bidandi Ssali.  DP’s Nobert Mao and UPC’s Olara Otunnu are yet to have their supporters’ signatures verified by the Electoral Commission but are expected to be nominated. CMI boss Brig Mugira

The government’s security services have stepped up their campaign to intercept telephone and email communications, Uganda Correspondent can exclusively reveal.

According to a source within the security services, the heightened interception activities are normal during election time.  “…This is just a natural reaction to the challenges that the election period is throwing at us”, said the government spy.

He said internally, they are particularly interested in knowing what the more militant political leaders and activists discuss amongst themselves. (more…)

Forum for Democratic Change party President Dr. Kizza Besigye, who is also the IPC’s flag bearer for the 2011 elections, has said Ssuubi 2011 is Buganda’s IPC.

Speaking to Uganda Correspondent by phone after he was cleared to be nominated as a presidential candidate, Dr. Besigye said “…Ssuubi is the IPC of Buganda.  We have now incorporated them into the IPC family agitating for free and fair elections and democratic change for the very first time in our country’s history”. Charged with war crimes

The International Criminal Court’s [ICC] appellate chamber on 19^th Oct confirmed charges brought against Jean-Pierre Bemba, a former Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) government official charged with war crimes.

Bemba allegedly committed the crimes in the neighbouring Central African Republic [CAR].  His alleged war crimes included rape, murder and pillaging.

Fresh evidence has emerged which suggests that the UPDF may indeed have plundered and killed innocent civilians in Karamoja.

The UPDF’s Special Forces under the command of President Museveni’s son Lt. Col. Muhoozi Keinerugaba were deployed in Karamoja region to conduct a disarmament exercise among the Karimojong cattle rustlers.

Gen. Kayihura's police arrest an opposition supporter

Overzealous police officers on Saturday 16^th interrupted and eventually broke up a rally in West Nile that had been organised by the Mao faction of the Democratic Party [DP].

Weakened VP?

Vice President Prof. Gilbert Bukenya would retain his job if President Museveni wins the 2011 elections, a junior State Minister has predicted.

Speaking to Uganda Correspondent at Kampala Serena Hotel on condition of anonymity, the youthful but influential State Minister in one of the most powerful ministries in Uganda said Museveni was “quietly happy” with Bukenya’s humiliation in the race for the powerful position of NRM Secretary General.  Museveni, like any other astute but opportunistic political strategist, the Minister said, would never be comfortable with a powerful deputy who is fit and ready to take over the presidency against his personal wish.
