Museveni back as NRM’s 2011 flag bearer

By Timothy Nsubuga

13th Sept 2010

He's back again!

Incumbent NRM party Chairman Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has been endorsed and returned unopposed as the party’s national Chairman.  According the NRM party constitution, Museveni’s retention of the party Chairmanship also makes him the party’s automatic flag bearer for the 2011 elections.

The NRM National Executive Council [NEC] endorsed Museveni at a 10hr meeting on Friday 10th Sept at State House Entebbe.  Whilst Museveni’s position was never in any doubt, sources that attended the meeting said the party’s NEC spent most of the 10hrs debating the fate of other top NRM big shots like Vice Chairman Hajji Moses Kigongo and Secretary General Amama Mbabazi. The year 2000: Kisangani worriors in action

Gulu: An explosive and previously untold version of the story of the bloody clashes between Rwandan and Ugandan troops in Kisangani more than 10yrs ago has emerged.

In June 2000, the two armies [Rwanda’s RPA and Uganda’s UPDF] that had fought shoulder to shoulder as allies to oust President Mobutu Sese Seko from power in Zaire, [now Democratic Republic of Congo [DRC] turned against each other for the second time and fought a bitter and bloody war that lasted up to six days.  The first clashes between the two erstwhile allies took place in 1999; no long after they toppled Mobutu. By John Stephen Katende

Pre-ticked NRM ballots

If there is one thing that has come out clearly from Uganda Correspondent’s interviews with people on the streets of Kampala, then it’s that the violence and rigging that characterised NRM’s primaries is a sign of things to come.

Even the more seasoned political analysts who spoke to Uganda Correspondent couldn’t find valid reasons to pour cold water on the views expressed on the streets.  The general fear is that similar or even worse violence and rigging will occur during the 2011 elections.

One political analyst who regularly comments on topical political issues in the Daily Monitor newspaper agreed (more…)

Britain abandons democracy fight for trade

By Timothy Nsubuga

British PM Cameron

British Prime Minister David Cameron’s Conservative-Liberal Democrat [Con-Dem] coalition government has significantly watered down the UK’s previous policy of insisting on the observance of human rights when dealing with African countries.

In a move that some analysts say was widely expected from a Conservative government, the foreign policy insistence, it seems, has shifted to the pursuit of trade deals.  Dr. Ephraim Okalebo, a 59yr old strategic studies expert who works for a major multi-national company in Abuja-Naigeria, gave Uganda Correspondent two reasons that he thinks could explain the shift in British foreign policy towards Africa.
